Hell yeah!
Thursday, July 3rd, 2008In just over a week or so there’s something coming up that my children and I are quite looking forward to.
Backstory: a couple months ago they were having the usual combination of “I’m bored, booooorrrrrrreeeeddddd” snivelwhines and squabbles over what (dumbass) show to watch on Disney, Home & Garden, or Nickelodeon channels. “Dudes,” I said, “I’m bored with your fighting. How about a movie? Can you handle a movie that has some cartoon violence and a really snarky anti-hero?” (As a sidenote, I really do talk like this to my kids, which is a bit scary and has probably dropped their IQs a few points.) They looked at me with the perfect t/weener mixture of skepticism and ennui but I was on a roll. “I love this movie! Let’s watch… Hellboy!”
After A got over chiding me with her typical prudishness at my swearing (”Sweetie, it’s called that, it’s not called Heckboy after all,” I retorted) I convinced them that they really had no choice, I was going to watch this film come, er, heck or high water. Besides they all know I rock like a boulder and would not steer them wrong.
Two hours later we had watched the film, watched some extras, and were starting up the film again for an encore viewing. R, showing a remarkable solidarity with me, decided that Abe Sapien was a squee-worthy character; while C, in remarkable solidarity with me of a different variety, announced that John Hurt did an excellent job in this film. A mostly liked the kittens and, in a moment that struck me as surreal, Hellboy’s tail. Ummmm, okay, sweetpea, me too.
Since that night we’ve watched it a few more times, and much to my children’s delight I have told them that I believe they have the maturity to handle an in-the-theatre viewing of the sequel, aptly named Hellboy II*. They’re excited, I’m excited, everyone is excited, and with luck there shall be an excursion to the local multiplex on the evening of July 14.
So, you ask, why Hellboy? Here are in order, a quick glimpse of the “man” himself, then the trailer for the new film, and fimally a behind the scenes interview with the director and some of the actors. It’s gonna be a wild ride, this movie, of that I am sure.
