Regarding the Olympics — There’s a nifty site from The New York Times that shows country-by-country medal tallies from 1896 through the currently occurring Games. You use the year-by-year slider to move from year to year.

I like the geographic version, sliding from year to year and seeing when certain countries show up or even regions of the world (1960 was the first year that Africa really appeared on the scene, for example.) If you click on a country for a given year more information appears below too. Rock on, B. Boukpeti of Togo, for your bronze in Canoe / Kayak Slalom!
