Runnin’ Down a Dream — TTT 08 July

A week or so ago I was humming a tune for a second when my son began to sing along. I was surprised that he knew the words, and said so, to which he answered something like I often sing Tom Petty songs. I honestly wasn’t aware of that, although as the years go by I become more and more appreciative of Petty’s music. It has really good driving guitar riffs and lyrics that stick with a person.

I thought of that little conversation this morning as I drove in to work and a Heartbreakers’ tune came on. It seemed appropriate for a summer morning when I’d rather be on the open road heading to somewhere, anywhere, rather than to my desk.

It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down
I had the radio on, I was drivin’
The trees went by, me and Del were singin’
Little runaway, I was flyin’

Yeah runnin’ down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin’ on a mystery, goin’ wherever it leads
I’m runnin’ down a dream

I felt so good, like anything was possible
I hit cruise control and rubbed eyes
The last three days the rain was unstoppable
It was always cold, no sunshine

Yeah runnin’ down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin’ on a mystery, goin’ wherever it leads
I’m runnin’ down a dream

I rolled on as the sky grew dark
I put the pedal down to make some time
There’s something good waitin’ down this road
I’m pickin’ up whatever is mine

Yeah runnin’ down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin’ on a mystery, goin’ wherever it leads
I’m runnin’ down a dream

And a bonus movie, Weird Al interviewing Tom Petty:
