Well. I have been by happenstance listening to a bunch of Weird Al recently and when I heard a certain song for the first time I honestly thought it was a joke tune.

“I really miss your hair in my face”? Huh? No one likes to wake up with some stray hair snaking out their mouth, do they? Ptui and I sure hope that’s a head-hair ptui and by the way please clean out the freaking tub strainer once in a while wouldja, you shedding freak?

Then there’s this snippet of lyrics…

I won’t think about you when I’m older
Cause we never really had our closure

…which struck me as one of two possibilities:

(a) Random word placement from those magnetic poetry sets

or

(b) Some guys got drunk, started joshing about the whole concept of “closure” and wrote the stupidest non-rhyme they could devise.

Then I heard the song again today on the drive from work. Holy smokes, people, this is a real tune. I was mesmerized by the banality of the lyrics, not enough to drive dangerously or anything but yes enough to pull out my little note book and scrawl that attention-to-grooming line up above during a stop light because god forbid I forget missing your hair in my face during the fifteen minutes of my commute.

By the way, in my opinion the very best part is the section about the dressing room. Oy. It actually made me visibly wince.

Anyway. Not very inspired lyrics in my opinion. Pathetic even. So here’s Hinder, singing “Better Than Me”, with the entire set of lyrics below.

I think you can do much better than me
After all the lies that I made you believe
Guilt kicks in and I start to see
The edge of the bed
Where your nightgown used to be
I told myself I won’t miss you
But I remember
What it feels like beside you

I really miss your hair in my face
And the way your innocence tastes
And I think you should know this
You deserve much better than me

While looking through your old box of notes
I found those pictures I took
That you were looking for
If there’s one memory I don’t want to lose
That time at the mall
You and me in the dressing room
I told myself I won’t miss you
But I remember
What it feels like beside you

I really miss your hair in my face
And the way your innocence tastes
And I think you should know this
You deserve much better than me

The bed I’m lying in is getting colder
Wish I never would’ve said it’s over
And I can’t pretend…
I won’t think about you when I’m older
Cause we never really had our closure
This can’t be the end

I really miss your hair in my face
And the way your innocence tastes
And I think you should know this
You deserve much better than me
I really miss your hair in my face
And the way your innocence tastes
And I think you should know this
You deserve much better than me
(And I think you should know this)
(You deserve much better than me)

Uh oh. Uh oh. Oh my god, I just looked up the group and they are the ones who sang “Lips of an Angel” too. Just be glad I’m not linking that song too or your head would explode with the combined force of the mediocrity.
